What is Sri lankan parippu curry / Lentil Curry?

Parippu curry is a must-have side dish with the main course. In Sri Lanka, this parippu curry/lentil curry is eaten with rice, bread, etc. This parippu curry is used on any festive occasion in our country without distinction between rich and poor.

Let’s know about parippu.

Many varieties of parippu are available in the market. That is, chickpea parippu, leaf parippu, and Mysore parippu are some of them. And the variety of colors including red, green, brown, yellow, and black are also available.

Lentils generally have a good market value and are the most popular food among people due to the fact that they can be prepared quickly. And lentils are a rich source of nutrition providing protein, fiber, and numerous minerals.

There are many ways of making lentils in different countries. Mainly in Sri Lanka, parippu curry and mirisata are made. Different types of snacks are prepared from parippu. The most popular snack made from parippu in Sri Lanka and India is Parippu Vade.

Ingredients to make Sri Lankan Parippu Curry

We use Mysore parippu to make this parippu curry out of many types of lentils. Most supermarkets have Mysore parippu. Look before you buy. The seeds of Mysore parippu are quite small. 

Mysore parippu

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Cup Lentils
  • 1/2 Medium Onion (sliced)
  • 4 Clove Garlic (sliced)
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Turmeric
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Raw curry powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Chili powder
  • 5 Curry leaves
  • 1 Cinnamon sticks
  • 1 Cup Coconut milk
  • 1/2 Cup Water

To Temper The Lentil Curry

  • 2 Tablespoon Oil
  • 2 Dried red chilies
  • Garlic (sliced)
  • 1/2 Onion (sliced)
  • 3 Curry leaves

Let’s make Sri Lankan Parippu Curry

  • Wash lentils properly a few times.
  • Place it in a medium-size saucepan.
  • Now add all the spices together with onion, curry leaves, and garlic cloves for the curry.
  • Then add water and mix it well.
  • Bring to the boil Simmer and cook
  • Stirring occasionally until the lentils are boiled.
  • Once lentils are cooked add coconut milk and bring it to boil again.
  • When lentils are cooked transfer them to another saucepan.

To Temper The Lentil Curry

  • Heat oil in a saucepan
  • Add onion, garlic, and curry leaves and fry it for 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Then add chili pieces and fry it for 2
  • Finally, add the lentil curry Taste for salt.
  • Serve with rice.

  • 1 cup Parippu / Lentil 
  • ½ Medium Onion sliced
  • 4 Garlic cloves sliced
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • ½ tsp Raw Curry Powder
  • ½ tsp Chili Powder
  • 5 Curry Leaves
  • 1 Small cinnamon sticks
  • 1 cup Coconut milk
  • ½ cup Water
  • Salt By taste

    ½ Medium Onion, 4 Garlic cloves, ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder, ½ tsp Raw Curry Powder, ½ tsp Chili Powder, 1 Small cinnamon sticks, 5 Curry Leaves
  • Then add water and mix it well.
    ½ cup Water
  • Bring to the boil Simmer and cook
  • Stirring occasionally until the lentils are boiled.
  • Once lentils are cooked add coconut milk and bring it to boil again.
    1 cup Coconut milk
  • When lentils are cooked transfer them to another bowl.

To Temper The Lentil Curry

  • Heat oil in a bowl
    2 tbsp Oil
  • Add onion, garlic, and curry leaves and fry it for 5-10 minutes.
    2 Garlic cloves, 3 Curry Leaves, ½ Medium Onion
  • Then add 2 dried red chilies and fry
    2 Dry red chilies
  • Finally, add the Parippu / lentil curry. mix well.
  • Taste for salt.
