Best Fish Rolls Recipe
What are these fish rolls?
Fish Rolls are a simple type of snack. A snack with a delicious filling in the middle with crispy sides. One of the most popular dishes in Sri Lanka. These delightful fish rolls can be found and tasted everywhere, from small restaurants to five-star hotels. There are three main shapes that make this, namely the cylindrical shape we made today, the triangular shape, and the rectangle shape.
And these rolls can be seen in different flavors. Some such forms are given below.

The real taste of these rolls is a bit spicy. Rolls are a snack eaten by everyone, young and old alike. I also had the same problems as a first-timer. Therefore, I thought I would share with you the problems that came to me and how I resolved them.
Not being able to fold the pancake into shape. The thickness of the pancake increases as the mixture that makes the pancake thickens. In such a case, add a little more water to the pancake mix and stir. In this way, the thickness of the pancake mixture can be reduced. Adding too much butter to the pan can cause the pancake to become thick. Add butter only to cover the surface. If possible, use a nonstick pan.
Although the rolls are made with a delicious filling, the taste is bland. The reason for this is that the pancake we make does not have enough salt. So make the pancake batter and taste the salt.
The rolls will absorb a lot of oil. Make sure that the oil is heated well before frying. Add a piece of bread crumbs to the hot oil. When the oil is well heated and it should bubble, now you can start frying the rolls. Fry in small batches.

The ingredients required to make fish rolls can be divided into four parts. Let’s identify the four parts first.
Let’s see the ingredients needed for these parts separately.
For the filling ingredients.
- 150 g Canned fish or steamed fish
- 100 g Boiled potatoes
- 01 Chopped Onion
- 03 cloves Chopped Garlic
- 01 Chopped Tomato
- 02 Chopped Green Chili
- Curry Leaves
- ¼ tsp Cardamom crushed
- ¼ tsp Clove crushed
- ¼ tsp Cinnamon crushed
- 100 g Chopped leeks
- 01 Carrot Grated
- 03 Cabbage leaves
- 01 tsp Salt
- ½ tsp Pepper
- 1 tsp Chili Flakes/chili pieces
- Chopped Ginger
- ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
For the pancake ingredients.
- 350 g All-purpose flour
- 01 tsp Salt
- 01 Egg
- Water
Crispy layer ingredients.
- 200 g Bread crumbs
- 2 Eggs
Vegetable oil is used to fry the roll.
Let’s learn how to make fish rolls step by step.
For the filling
- Add oil to the pan and heat it.
- When the oil is hot, add crushed ginger, powdered cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon. Add white salt, green chilies, and curry powder. Add chopped tomatoes and onions. Add turmeric, pepper, salt, and chili pieces. Temper it. (01 Chopped Onion, 03 cloves Chopped Garlic, 01 Chopped Tomato, 02 Chopped Green Chili, Curry Leaves,¼ tsp Cardamom, ¼ tsp Clove, ½ tsp Pepper, 1 tsp Chili Flakes/chili pieces, Chopped Ginger, ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder, ¼ tsp Cinnamon )
- Add chopped cabbage, leeks, and carrots and mix. (01 Carrot,03 Cabbage leaves,100 g Chopped leeks)
- Add the crushed fish. Check if you have salt and pepper powder to your taste. (150 g Canned fish, 01 tsp Salt, ½ tsp Pepper)
- Add the boiled Potato and mix well. (100 g Boiled potatoes)
For the pancake
- Add salt and egg to the flour and mix well. (01 tsp Salt,01 Egg,350 g All-purpose flour)
- Add some water to this and make a thick batter. Water
- After making the mixture, strain it through a strainer.
- Pour the mixture little by little and make the pancakes.
- Save about a tablespoon of the mixture.
- Keep some of the fillings in the middle of the pancake. Now roll this into a roll shape.
- It can be unfolded as soon as the last place of the roll is placed.
- Add some of the reserved pancake mixtures and seal well.
- Break two eggs, put them in a bowl, and beat them a little with a spoon. (200 g Bread crumbs, 2 Eggs)
- Now take the rolls one by one and dip them in egg and then in breadcrumbs.
- Heat some oil in a pan to fry the rolls. Vegetable Oil
- When the oil is hot enough, put the rolls in this oil and fry until golden.
- Keep the fried rolls to absorb the oil. Serve these rolls hot.
Because fish rolls absorb too much oil, eating them daily is not good for the body. It is advisable to eat deep fry food knowing its adverse effects.
